Dan narrowly misses out on club record

Starting his season early, Dan Steel competed at the South of England Athletics Association Combined Events Championships at Lee Valley on the 19th and 20th December.

Participating in the 60m, 60m Hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, pole vault and the 1000m, Dan accumulated 3,372 points, narrowly missing out on new personal best result, and club record, by just 11 points.

Biggleswade AC ‘Throws Fest’ a complete success

There were some fantastic results from Biggleswade athletes at the Biggleswade AC Throws Fest on the evening of Thursday 6th August.

Dan Steel recorded a new personal best of 8.61m in the shot put, with Sandra Ingham winning the shot put competition in the W50 group.  Sandra, and son Alex, both won their age category in the javelin and Ian Skerratt finished 3rd in the hammer with a new personal best distance of 14.12m.

Reports from recent Southern Athletics League, Eastern Veterans Athletic League and British Athletics League matches

Not even blustery showers could dampen Biggleswade Athletic Club spirits as they hosted the second match in the 2015 Southern Athletic League on Sunday 31st May.

The team were full to brimming with enthusiastic, talented competitors both young and old.  And it showed in the results.  Nearly every member of the team achieved a new personal or season’s best result and the ladies did exceptionally well notching up 18 wins which, added to the men’s 10 wins, made for a very successful day for the team.

New member Louis Dunderdale (pictured left) scored some valuable points for the team coming first in the hammer and javelin, as well as good positions in the long jump, shot put and discus.  Dan Steel managed a podium finish in the pole vault and triple jump competitions along with team mate, Cybil Laobena, who also gained a new personal best result in the pole vault (B string).  Tom Boggon was delighted with his win, and new personal best time, in the 400m (A string) with Connor Trudgill winning the B string race in the 400m.  Adam Murphy and John Frost had finished 1st and 2nd in the 1500m with Nick Haworth also winning the 3000m.

But the stars of the day surely must be the ladies team, with further wins on the track in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 3000m and the 100m hurdles, for Sarah Ridley, Laura Satahoo, Francesca Riley, Katie Miles, Lucy Masdin, Isobel Everest and Hannah Ridley.  Then in the field events Hannah, Laura, Francesca, Sarah along with team mates Rebecca Lee and Sandra Ingham, notched up yet more wins in the high jump, long jump, shot put, discus, hammer and javelin.

The final events of the day were the track relays (4 x 100m and 4 x 400m).  The competition in the men’s 4 x 100m race was very tough indeed and Biggleswade AC fought hard and held on to finish in 3rd place (the difference in time between the first and last team was less than a second so a very close fought race indeed).  The ladies, however, won their 4 x 100m race with ease, crossing the finish line more than 10 secs ahead of the rest of the field.  More valuable points for the team.

SAL 31 May - Tom Boggon 400m

At the end of the day Biggleswade AC has scored an amazing 273pts moving them up to 11th place in the league.

The next match is at Battersea on Saturday 20th June so let’s hope we have the same turn out that we did for our home match.

Biggleswade AC’s veteran athletes (those over the age of 35) competed at the prestigious Bedford International Athletic Stadium on the evening of Wednesday 3rd June, in the Eastern Veterans Athletic League.

It was a smaller than usual team of just five ladies and seven men who took on a variety of track and field events.  John Haines won his 400m race and came 2nd in the 1500m, with sprint coach, David Brown, finishing 4th and 3rd, respectively, in the 100m and 400m.  Racewalker, Robin Wynde, narrowly missed out on getting under 10 minutes in the 1 mile walk.

For the ladies, Lindsay Lister had superb runs in her 400m and 1500m races resulting in 2nd place positions in both.  Her coach, Zoe Luscombe, managed a very respectable 3rd place in her 400m race.  Sandra Ingham finished 1st in her javelin competition and 2nd in the discus. Whilst newcomers, Joanne Ellary and Julia Mackay, having only been throwing the discus and javelin for just a couple of weeks prior to this event, attained new personal best throws.

It was a busy week for Biggleswade AC athletes at the Bedford International Athletic Stadium.  Dan Steel, competing this time at the British Athletic League match on Saturday 6th June, managed new season’s best times in the 100m hurdles and the triple jump.

Decathlon Dan strikes again!

There is no stopping Biggleswade AC’s Dan Steel when it comes to combined track and field events. Dan notched up yet another new personal best score, and a new club record, of 4,208pts in the decathlon at the England Athletics U20/ Senior Combined Events Championships at Bedford last weekend. An excellent result and recognition of the huge effort Dan has been putting into his training this year.

At the Bedfordshire County Championships on Saturday 17th May, yet more personal records were smashed with nearly all of team Biggleswade AC notching up at least one new personal, or season’s, best result.

One of the newest members of the team, Valerie Snowball, stormed to a podium finish in the under 13 girls 100m final in a new personal best time of 13.98 secs and one of the club’s longest serving members, Sarah Ridley, had two wins, one in the shot put and the other in the discus.

Keeping it in the family, Sandra and Alex Kingham both managed superb results in the javelin, with Alex winning the under 20 men’s competition and mum, Sandra, coming second in the Senior Women’s.

Callum Dickson-Earle, also won his 100m hurdles race by a whisker and was only a second outside of his best recorded time.

A good “day at the office” for Dan and the Biggleswade AC young-stars

Dan Steel was in action again, last week, this time competing for Bedford & County in the British Athletics League match at Swansea on Saturday 9th May. Dan had a very good “day at the office”, finishing 2nd in the long jump and then two 3rd place finishes in the pole vault and the triple jump. Continue reading
