On Wednesday 2nd March the annual Bedfordshire Schools Cross-Country Relays, hosted by Biggleswade Athletic Club, took place at Rowney Warren, near Chicksands. Despite a couple of heavy rain showers during the morning it actually ended up being a dry afternoon, for the races, if a little chilly under the shade of the trees.
A total of 7 schools from the local area attended the event with just over 150 school children, in total, competing in the relays.
The first race of the day, over the 1km relay route, was the boys school years 5 and 6 race. Holywell Middle School won this race by nearly a minute ahead of Alban Academy and Lincroft taking the final two positions on the podium.
In the girls school years 5 and 6 race, Alban Academy improved from the first race to made it to the top spot on the podium, with Etonbury Academy taking second and Lincroft claiming third.
Over the same course, in the boys school years 7 and 8 race, Rushmoor School finished first, for the second year in a row, with Lincroft and Holywell Middle School claiming second and third places, respectively.
It was a close battle in the girls school year 7 and 8 race between Lincroft and Alban Academy, with Lincroft snatching first place by just four seconds. Robert Bloomfield Academy finished in third place.
In the competition for the fastest lap in each race, Alban Academy won two races, with Holywell Middle School and Rushmoor taking a win each.
